You can do some gentle prodding, but dressing someone down should be reserved for the rarest of occasions.

If you find yourself resenting a friend, then you should ask yourself if you still want to be their friend. If you only have negative things to say about them, then why are you spending your time with them in the first place? Shouldn't you only surround yourself with people whom you care about? There is no reason to waste your free time on people you have nothing good to say about. But friendships can take a long time to end. They can draw out so long that nobody remembers what they were showing up for in the first place. And then all of a sudden, things implode.
